Maya

Certified Tutor

I graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 2023 with a Bachelor's degree in History & Literature. Throughout college, I found a lot of fulfillment in being a mentor for younger students both in and outside of the classroom a passion I bring to tutoring. As a tutor, I love to utilize interactive lessons that get students thinking creatively and analytically. When I introduce a new idea in a lesson or editing session, I normally explain the concept using a fun example, and then allow students to practice with an activity, leaving space for questions throughout.

Much of my previous teaching experience comes from a program I volunteered with throughout college, where I taught civic education to 5th graders across the Greater Boston area every week. This experience especially taught me the importance of interactive lessons. I found the most success when I implemented exercises that connected ideas to the real world, like writing a letter to a congressperson. Additionally, I spent three years as an associate editor for the Harvard Crimson newspaper, a position that granted me experience both writing and editing articles as well as mentoring freshman writers one-on-one. I spent hours every week in the dining hall working with writers to copyedit both reported pieces and personal essays. As an editor, I make sure to provide sufficient guidance without overstepping. I also have further experience working with middle and high schoolers as a camp counselor, as well as experience teaching elementary schoolers within the museum space.

Although I tutor a broad array of subjects, I'm most excited about working with students on essay writing, reading, and history. And when I'm not teaching, I love to read, run, and surf!
