What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student's character, personality and hobbies.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By trying to make them understand why and how the information is related to their everyday lives.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Stop and take a break! Then revisit once the student has had some time to think about the concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Try bringing in reading material about things and subjects that interest them and that are fun.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Introductions seem to have worked best for me in the past.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Bringing in material about subjects that actually interest them.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Having the student explain back to me what they just did is usually a good non-test taking approach to gauging their understanding.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Assessments are necessary, but also a conversation helps.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By working with each student as an individual and seeing what works best for that particular student.

White boards if available, scrap paper, pencils, laptops, etc.
