Stewart

Certified Tutor

I began teaching/tutoring high school math in 1984. I taught all levels of high school math, from PreAlgebra through AP Calculus, for 11 years. After moving into an instructional leadership position, I have continued to tutor students and sub for classroom teachers.

Math is a participation sport. Even though it is considered an academic subject, achieving success in math is more like becoming a good musician, a good athlete, or a good artist. You need to think about it, practice it, and talk about it with others on a regular basis or you probably won't become very good at it.

If you study math like you study History, Science, or English, you are likely to have struggles. Students become successful in math the same way they become successful athletes, musicians, and crafters: practicing.

When you work with me, you will do most of the talking/working (if I do most the talking/work, you won't understand or remember very much). When you work with me, expect a patient person who has seen every kind of misunderstanding possible in math. I quickly determine what you do/don't understand and coach you to become better at that skill and meet the learning targets you have set for yourself!

Hobbies

I have many interests and hobbies beyond teacher. I enjoy watching almost all sports, especially baseball. I played and coached in the past, but my schedule doesn't allow for much of that anymore. I listen and play all kinds of music. I grew up listening to what has become classic rock music and have played violin since I was in fourth grade. Finally, I enjoy digital media. I regularly utilize photo, video, and sound editing software to produce various memory videos for clients.
