What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy revolves around the idea that every student has the potential to achieve their goals if they are equipped with the correct materials and if they possess the desire to succeed. As a tutor, I hope to provide them with the tools that are necessary for them to excel in academics and feel confident in their abilities.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I will spend the first few minutes getting to know them, asking them about their studying strategies, and reviewing their academic goals so that we can create a plan that will help them succeed.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help students become an independent learner by teaching them study and organizational techniques that they can utilize for the rest of their lives.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by providing them with encouragement and support. I understand that it is challenging to stay motivated, so I would help them stay on track by reminding them of the goals that the students have set for themselves.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a concept, I will explain it to the student with a completely different approach because it usually helps to look at the concept from a different angle when it is challenging.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I help students who are struggling with reading comprehension by asking them to underline the key verbs and adjectives in the paragraphs so that they have a better understanding of what the author is trying to convey. Ultimately, we will use these words and put them together to make sense of the passages.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When I start to work with a student, the most successful strategy is to be supportive and approachable because it assures the student that I am on their side and I am there to help them. I try to be as understanding as possible so that the student does not hesitate to ask me questions.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited and engaged with a subject that they are struggling in by showing them how the subject applies to the real world and how important it is to appreciate all of the thought that goes behind the development of the particular subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

To ensure that a student understands the material, I would make up random questions and administer them in a casual manner to see whether the student truly grasps the concepts.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build a student's confidence in a subject by tracking their progress. I would show the student where they started and affirm how far they have come and how much they have achieved since we first began.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by asking them how they prefer to learn and if there is anything I can do to go out of my way to help them achieve their academic goals.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by catering to the specific student instead of using a general approach to teaching the subject. In other words, I acknowledge that what works for one student may not work for another, so I will seek out the best teaching strategy to ensure that the students are understanding the material to the best of their abilities.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

During a tutoring session, I use whatever materials are necessary for the student to understand the material, whether it be a toy car, a calculator, or a banana.
