Teach them basic concepts and then let them try examples on their own.... Patience is vital.... Ensure they understand the concept, and motivate them.... Try a different approach until they get it. Maybe give an example first.

Discuss their interests, what motivates them, and their goals. What do they want to get out of tutoring?... Guide them through questions without telling them the answer, gradually removing supports with each practice until they are able to complete the task on their own.
