Emily
Certified Tutor
I am an elementary school teacher with experience in teaching reading and writing to grades K-3rd, as well as classroom teacher in grades K and 1st. I have tutored K-8th grade reading, writing, and math as well as experiences tutoring SAT verbal skills to high school students. My credentials include a Bachelors in Early Childhood Education (Birth-3rd grade) as well as a Masters in Literacy Education (Birth-adulthood). I am Maryland State certified in both areas and do work full time as a teacher currently, my availability reflects this. I enjoy using hands on and engaging learning techniques to teach even the most unenthusiastic learners the skills needed to succeed academically.
Due to the current pandemic I am available and familiar with online platforms for educating and tutoring but would also be willing to tutor in person, in an outdoor setting.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all children are capable of learning and succeeding with the right motivation and positive influence in and out of the classroom.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Start with introducing myself to the student. Then begin a few practice questions to gauge the students' ability and level of assistance in the area(s).
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach them with step by step instructions. Give work them to do independently, while observing their thought process. Give them advice on how to improve.
